A Grandmother's Tale
This is Emily Albright's first Christmas since her beloved husband, Colin, died. She had planned to spend the Christmas holidays with her friends. Then her granddaughter, Marissa, becomes sick. Marissa’s family has plans to vacation in Hawaii. Since Marissa is too sick to go with her parents and brothers, Emily decides to cancel her plans and let Marissa stay with her.
Marissa finds an old picture of her grandmother and a soldier embracing. She realizes that the man is not her grandfather. When Marissa questions her grandmother about the man in the picture, Emily relates the story of her love affair and how she meets and marries Colin. Emily’s story begins on December 21, 1945. Emily follows her boyfriend, that she is planning to marry, to England. Once there, she finds out that he doesn’t love her and has left the country. Emily begins to work in a refugee orphanage during a hepatitis outbreak.
As Emily tells her story to Marissa, the grandmother and granddaughter develop a special bond and love for each other.
Marissa decides she is going to plan a big surprise for Emily and arranges for Emily and the now grown orphans to have a “family gathering”.
Although this book is set during Christmastime, it would be enjoyable anytime of the year. This book is a story about love, loss, caring separation and reunion. I would highly recommend this book.
