It is my first book to read in 2016 over a few days off although people say they can read it in one night. It is beautiful and does not take up a lot of time to read. I love Patti Smith's writing voice and it is almost like I get the feeling that I know her now. She is very much a poetic thinker and distills life through a very creative lens and personality. Just Kids won a National Book Award and is very worthwhile to read. I have to say the little book Woolgathering is my favorite poetry type book of hers. I have now realized she has a lot of older books to enjoy as well that I have not read.

Personally, I have not gotten into her music so much as of now, but I love how she lives poetically along with her life with Robert Mapplethorpe and other creative artists she is friends with. It is very inspiring to read the details.

Please find her in an author search for placing a hold. There are several copies of Just Kids and I remember Oxford has M Train and Woolgathering. SIRSI is down and I cannot post the usual quick links, but it gives me time to recommend her and find this interview.
Oh how I love desserts to bring to potlucks, create for my son and his friends, or to give to someone for cheer! Holidays were created for desserts. I can't say too many good things about this cookbook. By all means, go to her blog and look at some pics. Click for Seton Rossini's pictures from blog She has created desserts for the windows of Macy's and shown her Succulent Cupcakes on television and lives in Baltimore, Maryland.

I have to say I love the Mark Rothko cookies best because he is my favorite artist. I have a huge passion for modern art but he has to be my favorite because he did all those color study paintings that seem simple (everyone thinks they can do it better) but are the most amazing to see in a gallery and captured my complete respect and reverence when I saw in Chicago. You can also pick from Klimt truffles and Pollock pie.

I will also admit that I have always loved making and sharing desserts but mine are never beautiful to show. It always reminds me of being in my Grandmother's kitchen as a child and being free to bake, but not at home. Mine taste fabulous but I can't seem to get the presentation right and always something happens. Some tragic misfortune I realize my cake is not sitting level in the oven or like the time my chocolate chess pie looked like poo to everyone because it did not firm for whatever reason. Baking is messy fun, but I really am looking forward to maybe buying Seton Rossini's book and making a pretty one that has some sort of aesthetic. Can I do it?

Atlanta, she had looked out the dining-car window with a delight almost
physical. Over her breakfast coffee, she watched the last of Georgia’s
hills recede and the red earth appear, and with it tin-roofed houses set

With all the current buzz about this book, I finally bought a used, old student copy of To Kill a Mockingbird. I really did not want to take up a library copy with my slow reading and after all, I might want to read it outside, throw it in my purse, and take a chance on ruining the book. Somehow I had made it this far without reading it. It is the most pleasure to me now and nothing could be more exciting than waiting for her new, lost treasured original manuscript to be published! I am delighted with the first two chapters and seeing a lot of language I remember hearing as a girl like the word "flivver." Look it up too just so you will know the correct shade of meaning! I can't remember when I've enjoyed a book so much.

These mysteries are a great read for all ages. You meet interesting people and there are always things to learn. In Gunns and Roses you learn about Scottish Highland games, how a sporran is used and what ferulles are. In A Spicy Secret the mystery is not the attic, but found in the floor of the carriage house next to Annie's house. This one will make you hungry just reading it!

Also, these mysteries are simply fun, good stories written by different authors in the series: Annie's Attic. They are just fine for patrons who enjoy clean or Christian reads. Please remember to ask for Annie's Attic Mysteries under different author's names.

Talk about twists in the tale! If Danny Cartwright had proposed to
Beth Wilson the day before, or not decided to visit a new pub to
celebrate or had left earlier, he would not have gone to prison for
murdering his best friend, who happened to be Beth's brother. He is
determined to get out and get his revenge on the four high class friends
who were the witnesses against him. Archer is famous for plot twists
and this one has more turns than a mountain road with a shocker at the
very end. If you like a book that keeps you guessing and reveals
character through surprise, this is the book for you.
With a name like Charley Davidson, you expect "more attitude than a rich kid with his daddy's Porsche", but the Grim Reaper? How else would you explain a girl who sees dead people and helps them through to the beyond?

Charley has seen the dead all her life, and it hasn't been a bed of roses. The dead won't stop bothering her, the living are a pain, and her uncle keeps interrupting her beauty sleep to solve crimes. And she really needs her beauty sleep lately, or rather wants her beauty sleep, as she keeps having hot, sexy dreams of a man who never quite shows his face.

Throw in a few murders, a 13-year old gangster ghost named, Angel, some death defying stunts, and a criminal lack of coffee and you the start of a supernatural mystery thriller with some really hot romance.

I have to admit I am ambivalent about this book, it has snappy dialogue, a cool premise (who wouldn't want to read about the Grim Reaper), and caffeine laced action, but I'm not fond of the twist at the end of the book. That being said, other than the plot twist, it was an enjoyable read.
So, about this book, I picked it up late last Wednesday night, thinking I was only going to read a few chapters. I just wanted to find out what the book was about before I went to bed.

So.... four hours later at 2:00am, I finished the book. I didn't mean to stay up until 2:00am, however I kept thinking just one more chapter, I just want to find out if they finally kiss, or who the murderer was, or... So, needless to say, I couldn't put this book down.

If you like your romance with a heavy dose of mystery, or your mystery with a heavy dose of romance, then this is the next book you should read.

The book opens with Grace finding the dead body of her boss and unfortunately for her, this makes her and the other employees of her motivational speaker boss, a suspect. Tension tightens when the police find a connection to a previous murder she witnessed and the nightmares, strange emails, and paranoia begin to mount.

The last thing that Grace needs is a blind date, especially a blind date with a pessimistic venture capitalist that views her positive thinking philosophy as a bunch of hooey. However, he is kind of hot...
Karigan G'ladheon is a Green Rider—a seasoned member of the elite messenger corps of King Zachary of Sacoridia. But Karigan is no ordinary Rider, for she was able to transport the evil spirit of Mornhavon into the future, though no one knows how far he has been sent. During this window of relative safety, King Zachary decides to send Karigan and a small contingent of scouts, accompanied by a small group of Eletians—a magical race who once lived in the lands now tainted by Mornhavon's magic—into Blackveil Forest.

Though Mornhavon is gone, the forest is still a treacherous place filled with monstrous creatures and deadly traps. And unbeknownst to the band of Eletians and Sacoridians, another small group has entered the forest—Arcosian descendants who have kept Mornhavon's dark magic alive in secret for centuries, and who now plan to avenge their long ago defeat by bringing Sacoridia to its knees. Blackveil is the fourth novel of the acclaimed Green Rider series.
So, I've been making an effort lately to read outside my "box", or preferred genres. I thought a good place to start would be the New York Times Bestsellers list . And, towards the top of the list is James Patterson's Hope to Die with his detective, Alex Cross. With this being the 22nd book in the series, however, I decided to start at the beginning with Along Came a Spider.

Alex Cross is full of sass, empathy, dogged persistence, and in your face toughness. He needs to use all of those skills to catch what looks like a serial killer in the slums of Washington D.C. Six black people from the bad part of town are already dead and the killer shows no signs of stopping. Unfortunately, Cross' superiors pull him off that case and want him to work a high profile kidnapping case. Can Alex solve both cases before more bodies start piling up?

This book was a mind bending thrill ride. I truly liked the character of Alex Cross, Patterson's writing was smooth, the action never-ending, the twists twisty. So, why do I plan to never read the rest of the series?

I've discovered that James Patterson is too far outside my box. I can read about angry villains, power tripping villains, greedy villains. However, creepy, stalking psychopathic villains that hide their madness behind a smile disturb my sleep and I jump at shadows too much to want to read about them.

So, for those of you with a stronger stomach than I, please plan to enjoy your evening with the Detective Alex Cross.

Just, check behind the door before you go to bed tonight. :-)
How could I encapsulate The Princess Bride better than S. Morgenstern himself:

"Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True love. Hate. Revenge. Giants. Hunters. Bad men. Good men. Beautifulest ladies. Snakes. Spiders. Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passion. Miracles."
Franci Duncan was having a night out with friends. If she had known that she was going to run into her old boyfriend, Sean, she would have stayed home. Sean is everything she remembers him to be: gorgeous, confident, and heart breaking. He also seems to want a relationship with her again.

As far as Franci is concerned that ship has sailed and she explains this very clearly before slamming her car door in his face. Even if she wanted to start a relationship, she has a secret she has been keeping for years from Sean.

A secret that Sean is about to learn, because he is not prepared to accept that the one girl he still dreams of, is beyond his reach.

This is a sweet slice of hometown life spiced with amusing and heartwarming characters. The kind of book you settle down with to enjoy before the fire on a cold winter's day.
Cheers,
Don Tillman in his own words is "thirty-nine years old, tall, fit, and intelligent, with a relatively high status and above-average income." Unfortunately, even with all of these qualifications, he has never had a second date. Relationships in general do not come easy to him and this is typified by the "Apricot Ice Cream Disaster" where his date walks out on him when his back is turned. This does not stop Don, however, who has decided he would like a life-partner.

So the "Wife Project" is born.

How does an extremely logical, process oriented academic go about determining the identity of this new life partner? With a twenty-six page questionnaire, of course. So, when his best friend, Gene, sends a woman to his office, he assumes that she has passed the questionnaire and asks her to dinner. He wonders if it was a joke when he finds out about her habitual lateness, vegetarianism, disorganization, and smoking habit.

She is totally unsuitable to the Wife Project and Don feels it is a good thing they won't see each other again. However, she had an interesting project of her own that would dovetail into his own genetics research. Maybe he should contact her again, just as friends of course...

---

So, I found that this book slips through the boundaries of genre classification. Is it a cerebral romance? humorous mainstream? a look at social issues? The answer, is all that and more.

All of us have felt out of place at one time or another, this gives us a starting point to empathize with Don, who has always been out of sync with "social norms". I enjoyed reading this book from Don's point of view and seeing how he dealt with life. Overall, I found the book to be a fun, enjoyable read.
So you think you have had a bad day?

Crown Prince Raoden woke this morning in his comfortable bed and stretched luxuriously before getting up. He rang the bell for the servants and as he was rather hungry this morning, he waited impatiently for breakfast to arrive.

However, when breakfast did arrive, it came with a servant who screamed and fled at the sight of him. Hours later, his family had pronounced him dead and he had been imprisoned in the crumbling city of Elantris.

His crime?

He had gone through the transforming power of the Shaod. Ten years ago, before the magic failed, this would have made him akin to a god. Now, he's an undying wretch who can feel pain but not heal, whose only future is madness.

Can he make life better for a city of hopeless scavengers and brutal predators? If so, will it make a difference in a country on the brink of war?

--

Elantris is that rare one volume fantasy book that doesn't recycle the old cliches of quest, sword fighting, etc. And while above I only mentioned Raoden, there are several more characters such as the feisty Sarene, and dedicated Hrathen that have their own struggles and stories to tell in this fascinating tale.

Cheers,
A journal of an American foreign correspondent stationed in Europe (particularly Germany) between 1934 and 1941. Shirer provides a first-hand account of the steady rise of the Nazis as the official political power in Germany, through the early stages of World War II.

Today, the broad details of the path that led to the War are basically familiar and might seem to have an inexorable quality. So it is fascinating to read an account that captures the uncertainty and confusion of the actual period.

Shirer also provides a striking account of the character of German life during the Nazi era. One story that particularly stood out for me was that of a German woman who was officially informed that her son was missing and presumed killed in action. However, the BBC reported that her son had been taken prisoner. When eight of her friends and family let her know that her son was still alive, she reported them all to the police and had them arrested for listening to the BBC (listening to foreign broadcasts was illegal in Germany after the war began). Details such as this make for a compelling and eye-opening read.

Unbroken is a very inspiring true story of the life of Louis Zamperini who was captured by the Japanese in World War II. It tells about the child who becomes this War Hero and how he played sports and almost became the fastest Olympic runner ever before service and everything else about his life and childhood.

My 13 year old son is anxious to see the movie! He is a natural when it comes to military interest. We listened to the book on CD together; at 10 he could not have read such a large book or had that kind of attention. Since he enjoyed this book, we developed a tradition of listening while driving and also at bedtime. His life inspired an interest in sports that he did not previously have. If you see the movie, you absolutely must read the book! It is time well spent.
In the dark days after Thanksgiving, before the holiday season is in
full swing, Sally Kern drags out a big box filled not with holiday
decorations, those will come later, but with books.

Sally
and Stephen Kern read to their kids pretty much every night, but the
books in this box are special, reserved for this time of year only. They
are filled with stories, mostly about Christmas, but also about
Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and the winter solstice.

"I think it's
wonderful to have books as a centering activity this time of year,

Thanksgiving, the Christmas pummel starts. And so this is something
that is very grounding for them and for us."
This is just a little story to share I heard years ago while driving of a family's tradition of reading books in Winter. I think about it, not that I do the same thing, each year. Included are some links for the new good books out there for Children and Young Adult. The next two links are mostly for picture books.

Sometimes in busy lives, people need books but are not able to spend the time to think about which one. So, hopefully this helps. Most every book is available at FRL at one of our libraries! I am pretty sure I've seen most come through acquisitions and go back to the the libraries! I will not try to recommend any particular one but share by posting quick links of good lists for those who want to look and browse and have a bit of help of the reviewers.

The holidays are a great time to read when our schedules loosen up a bit, hopefully after Christmas and the days are dark and cooler if not cold and icy, snowy like our Northern neighbors. What could be more peaceful than a fireplace and a book? Over the years I've enjoyed looking at a special New Yorker edition just for holidays and packed full of book ideas for gifts, advertisements along with stories. But, I don't subscribe anymore.

I was excited to see the Seattle Times list and see my friend on it. Sarah Bird and I are facebook friends through another Texas friend, Tracey that I share a lot of poetry writing and ideas with. We have so much in common like Southern Sisters meant to be in spirit. I have voted on preferred book cover selections for The Gap Year and have seen her photographs, which are beautiful. I admit, I have not gotten to reading her just yet.

In her most ambitious, moving, and provocative novel to date, Sarah Bird makes a stunning departure. Above the East China Sea
tells the entwined stories of two teenaged girls, an American and an
Okinawan, whose lives are connected across seventy years by the shared
experience of profound loss, the enduring strength of an ancient
culture, and the redeeming power of family love.

I have read Euphoria by Lily King which was a wonderful tale of anthropologists working out in the field with native cultures. It is based loosely on the life of Margaret Mead.

A Review from the New York Times on Euphoria

There are many good books on this list both fiction and otherwise that I have seen come to the libraries. I enjoy reading these lists and seeing perhaps that I have not read it all, but a little bit of what is considered good by many reviewers. I see that I am perhaps on a fair path. Reading is thinking of books, perhaps not reading them now,
listening to others' ideas or loves and planning for the future and browsing at bookstores or libraries, sharing that book with others or ordering online and waiting for it to arrive either electronically or otherwise. I am just now reading Tom Robbin's biography after a good friend suggested a couple days ago but published much earlier this year!

Have lovely Holidays, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Joyeux Noël, Feliz Navidad, (I am sure I'm leaving something out I have seen that atheists are protesting this year in a handful of cities by billboard about what everyone else calls it) but I am hoping to include all even those having a Non-Holiday!!!!
I have never read Richard Ford. He has written Independence Day and the Sportswriter which have earned him a lot of respect not just as a Mississippi writer, but a contemporary American writer. I loved listening to Ford's conversation and his opinions of other writers. I love his lack of ego, his intellect, and his Mississippi accent. Ford, I want to read! Let Me Be Frank With You will be coming soon!

I am reading Tracks of a Rolling Stone by Henry J. Coke. Coke wrote his memoirs in 1905 and it describes upper class English society in the last half of the nineteenth century. I started reading it because he is reported to be a writer with one of the largest vocabularies in a study called "Vocabulary Analysis of Project Gutenberg". Melville is also on that list.

Coke is not nearly the writer that Melville was, but he is still interesting. His account of his travels, east to west, across the Rockies reminds me a little of Stanley's trip across Africa to find Livingston. When Coke finally drags himself out of the American wilderness, a physical ruin with nothing but his clothes, he presents himself to American army officer in Dalles, Oregon:

"Pray sir,’ said I in my best Louis Quatorze manner, ‘have I the pleasure of speaking to Major Dooker?"

"Tucker, sir. And who the devil are you?"

Let me describe what the Major saw: A man wasted by starvation to skin and bone, blackened, almost, by months of exposure to scorching suns; clad in the shreds of what had once been a shirt, torn by every kind of convict labour, stained by mud and the sweat and sores of mules; the rags of a shooting coat to match; no head covering; hands festering with sores, and which for weeks had not touched water—if they could avoid it. Such an object, in short, as the genius of a Phil May could alone have depicted as the most repulsive object he could imagine.

"Who the devil are you?"

"An English gentleman, sir, travelling for pleasure."

Louis Quatorze is Louis XIV, King of France. Phil May was a popular cartoonist for Punch magazine.
Sometimes a book is so good that we cannot help but share with the others in our back room as we open the box, receive it, catalog it, attach the call number labels, and so on. I would have to say this process of discovery is the best benefit from working with the library along with possibly seeing one to check out. This book is quite fun especially if you think Martha Stewart is a prude and couldn't hope to accomplish all those crafting projects even with a large staff. We have all laughed to the point of tears and shared our own stories of failed projects.

It made me think about the time I wanted to decorate my son's first birthday cake. I did not realize cake decorators are trained professionals with education and practice along with specialized equipment. So, I buy something in Kroger that was completely overpriced, full of chemical colorings, insufficient, inadequate, and the cake looked just as undecorated when I got finished. I was able to construct some sadly shaped leaves for Fall even though I doubted myself all the way through the process.

I think we are all a bit idealistic when undertaking a craft. More often than not, it turns out mediocre. It doesn't always speak to us the same in completion as the idea seemed so wonderful to do! Many times we cannot share success stories that will make us look so smart, so crafty. It certainly makes us realize, life is not the destination but the journey.

This book is very enjoyable and will make you enjoy your failed crafts truly more than any that turned a success! Why not look and laugh too?

Bill Bryson has done it again with another book that
is full of funny and strange facts, as well as humor. The summer of
1927 was an eventful summer in American history, which included Charles
Lindbergh's famous flight; the great Mississippi flood; the release of
The Jazz Singer; Babe Ruth's 60 home runs; and the execution of Sacco and
Vanzetti. And if that is not enough, there is a full account of the
story that received more lines in the press than the sinking of the
Titanic, the "dumb-bell murder case."
My
favorite Southern writer is Carson McCullers, specifically The Heart is
a Lonely Hunter. I believe that the chubby deaf mute (Spiros) is a
Buddha figure and his companion (John Singer) is like a priest or monk.
John hears the confessions of all those in the community and comes to
the Buddha to ask for forgiveness for everyone in the community.

The
Buddha may or may not be in tune with another, larger universe. The
narrator leads us to believe that he is not and that to believe that
Spiros is anything but an uncaring, self-indulgent being is to suppose
too much. However, narrators are like oracles: they really do not know
what is happening to them. They, like McCullers, cannot be faulted for
making some conjectures about what comes out of the mouths (or out of
their pens), but they really do not know--in fact, they are likely to be
wrong.
Sign up for Hoopla Digital today with your library card and pin number; that is all that's required to obtain digital access to movies, music, audiobooks, and TV shows. Call your local library to get your pin number, if you are not familiar with the 4 digit code. It is similar to the way Netflix works, but it very unique and offers much more music and audio books. Also, it is free to use!

I use Hoopla on my Samsung Galaxy 4. Although I haven't tried the video items (I access by phone) I have really enjoyed getting Kafka's Metamorphosis (I admit to not being able to absorb it by reading it) andGuide to Green Living. They say any released music is available so I wait for Royksopp's new album. I have gotten access to an older album and also listened to the first Pink Floyd 1967: Piper at the Gates of Dawn..

I find Hoopla really easy to use. I downloaded the app with no problems and it streams into my device perfectly. I love being able to listen for a few days and then it disappears after the time frame so I do not have anything to do and I can always listen again if I choose.

Although I do not enjoy paying the bill for my device monthly, I am always looking for ways for it to improve my quality of life along with somehow to keep the battery charged. Hoopla is a fabulous way to enjoy the moments at the gym, doing chores in the house, walking the dog, and so on!

Be sure to come in to your library and ask any questions you might have about the Hoopla! Get someone to help you enjoy! Each patron has 8 items per month available so why not use them!
"What first stuns the young writer emerging from college is that
there is no clear-cut road for him to travel on. He must chop a path in
the wilderness of his own soul; a disheartening process, lifelong and
lonesome."-- Flannery O’Connor

She was either a
renaissance woman or just an indecisive one. Before she settled into a
life as a novelist and short story writer, Flannery O’Connor dabbled in
journalism, cartoons, poetry and poultry. (Oddly enough, the last of
those was arguably the passion that stuck with her the longest.)
