The View From Saturday, by E.L. Konigsburg

The Ties that Bind

This Newbery Award winning book is written from the point of view of the four central characters, with some of the secondary characters fleshing the story out as needed.

Four sixth graders, essentially living worlds apart, who are joined by remote family ties as well as school affiliations, are brought together to form a scholastic team. In the process they form a friendship, naming themselves, "The Souls."

The thin thread of the obvious main plot centers on winning a scholastic event, however the deeper and more interesting plot shows the development of the characters maturing from children into young adults through a shared ordeal.
