Beautiful Blackbird, by Ashley Bryan

Folktale of Zambia

Beautiful Blackbird, by Ashley Bryan

Long ago, blackbird is voted the most beautiful bird in the forest. The other birds, who are colored green, yellow, blue, and red, are so impressed that they beg blackbird to paint their feathers with a touch of black so they can be beautiful too. Although blackbird warns them that true beauty comes from within, the other birds persist. So each is given a bit of black to enhance his beauty –the markings that detail birds to this very day.

Beautiful Blackbird presents an adaptation of a folktale from Africa that celebrates the importance of appreciating one’s own inner beauty. The book lends itself to rhythm and song, call and response and sing-a-long. Young children will enjoy the colors, the spirited pictures and the fun of the text.
