Come Back, Como, by Steven Winn

Quirky and Clever

If you liked Marley and Me, you will enjoy this dog-centric tale as well. Como, a mixed breed terrier from an animal shelter, enters the lives of the Winn family and turns their lives upside down. He apparently had been abused earlier in life by a man and hadn’t forgotten the trauma, which greatly hampered the author’s attempts to bond with him.

Como, full of quirks, clever and unpredictable, readily accepts the attentions of Steven’s wife Sally and daughter Phoebe, but seeks to avoid Steven at all costs. The author wrote of these trials and tribulations as he sought to win over this eccentric, shaggy puppy in a well received ten-part series of newspaper articles in the San Francisco Herald. From these articles came the book. Como and his family still live in San Francisco.
