This book is about Skeeter, a new graduate of Ole Miss in the early 1960s. Skeeter is a very head-strong young woman who notices how black maids of some of her friends are being treated. She eventually has the idea of letting the maids tell there stories: of being maids, and raising their employer's children. In doing this, Skeeter raises tensions even higher in 1960s Mississippi.
