A Year Down Yonder, by Richard Peck

Newbery Medal

This is the hilarious sequel to A Long Way from Chicago. Mary Alice has been sent to spend a year with Grandma Dowdle because of the 1937 recession.

This book tells us the adventures of fifteen year old Mary Alice and her larger than life Grandma Dowdle.

These adventures include a bucket of glue, a large snake that lives in the attic, a nude model running through town, young love, and a night time hunting adventure.

As you read this book you will see the deep affection developing between hard and gruff Grandma and Mary Alice.
