1942 Paris
The author's first book published in English is a fictionalized account of the roundup and arrest of thousands of Jewish families in 1942 Paris. The book focuses primarily on Sarah, a Jewish girl who secretly locks her younger brother in a cupboard in their apartment. Hiding the key to the cupboard in her pocket, she promises to return and rescue him as soon as she can.
Sarah and her parents are taken to the Velodrome d’Hiver stadium. Her family and thousands of other Jews spend several days there in unsanitary conditions. Eventually, she is separated from her parents at the Auschwitz death camp.
An American journalist living in Paris, Julia Jarmond, is assigned to cover the 60th anniversary of the roundup. Her research soon reveals a secret linking Sarah to Julia’s in-laws. Julia must decide where her loyalty lies, since her in-laws want the secret to remain hidden.
This is such a compelling story. The author pushes the reader into wanting to know more. Will Sarah save her brother? Will the secret tear Jarmond and her in-laws apart? What happens to Sarah and her family? Read Sarah’s Key to find out.
