The Dragon and the Pearl, by Barbara Cartland

A Spy in China

A story of intrigue and love set in 1900’s China. Stanton Ware is a spy for the British who is accomplished in languages and the customs of many countries. He is in China to discover firsthand the current political attitudes of the rulers and finds himself in the middle of a war about to erupt.

Stanton enlists the help of Tseng-Wen, a high ranking individual of China who wants peace. Tseng-Wen sends Stanton Ware traveling deeper into the country with a beautiful concubine named Zivana. Zivana is of mixed origin and claims to hate the English, at least until she meets Stanton Ware. The two travel through China and share adventures and dangers to help bring peace to the country.

An easy read and very mild.
