Mount Olympus?
I was very interested in Greek Mythology when I was in junior high, so when I happened upon Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips, I was intrigued. Gods presents the Olympians living in modern day London—most of them living together in a dilapidated mansion and growing older and weaker in power, but still immortal. To make ends meet, Artemis is a dog-walker, Hermes is a messenger, and Aphrodite is a phone sex worker..and Apollo is trying to turn himself into a TV reality star.
Seeing the Gods portrayed this way is quite interesting, and the ‘Badly’ in the title is quite appropriate—this is definitely a novel for adults! Into the lives of the Gods come a mortal couple, Alice and Neil. Without spoiling too much of the plot, through their interactions with these mortals the Gods find out just WHY they are losing their powers and how to get back to their Mount Olympus glory.
This is Phillips’ first novel, and I am eager to see what she does next.
