CHOOSING BOOKS FOR BABIES

These are GENERAL guidelines…

Babies develop at different rates during these very early months! You can use books from previous and later “reading levels.” Babies will enjoy books from all the categories. The important thing is to find books that you & your baby can enjoy together and not get frustrated!

0-3 months
Bold colors, geometric designs, mirrors, blocks, rattles, soft fabric books Nursery rhymes, soothing rhythms, lullabies Singing, talking while doing daily routines

3-6 months
Board books with bright pictures, touch & feel, photographs of babies Busy boxes, pop-up toys, things to reach for, music, Peek-a-boo, where is baby?

6-9 months
Mobility, more active – action rhymes, clapping games, fingerplays, babbling, beginning to understand words & inflections – repetitive rhymes & songs, homemade books using family photos & objects with personal meaning

9-12 months
Understanding simple commands, (“wave bye-bye”), social skills, first words, books that name objects, animal sounds, pictures of children, board books they can & try to turn pages, give baby a wooden spoon & pan and beat to the rhythm of favorite nursery rhymes

12-18 months
Beginning to walk and talk, “into everything”! Will not “sit still” for long periods… Short, simple stories, lift-the-flap, naming familiar objects (“my first word” books)– can point to objects on the page when asked. Books with actions and music

  1. yeah they need it so much. At home i teach my kids how to read using phonics. Try to make use of this Learn to read. Practical parents like me should be smart enough in teaching your kids.
